People who come to Turkey as international students are expected, during their official residence, to have health insurance. Two kinds of health insurance are available. You can go to any private health insurance provider and use plans designed for foreigners if you like. Bear in mind that these plans are limited in scope and are available only in hospitals where the insurance provider is contracted.
General Health Insurance (GSS) is another alternative. This form of insurance, which is regulated by the Social Security Institution of the Republic of Turkey, gives you the right to receive care free of charge in all state hospitals. In this way, by making a meagre contribution, you will get your prescription drugs. With GSS, the most important thing to remember is that you must apply within three months of your university enrollment.
