Protect yourself and your family with insurance

Consider insurance to protect yourself, your family, your home, and your belongings.

Healthcare in Spain

The Spanish healthcare system ranks among the best in the world. Social security payments fund the system, meaning that most residents don’t require private insurance to access health services.

While the Spanish state system is excellent, some foreigners choose to take out additional private coverage, which can cut waiting times and make it easier to see an English-speaking doctor. Health care in Spain is of good quality and widely available. Emergency medical care is awarded to everyone in Spain, regardless of nationality or ability to pay. Although Spanish citizens have free health care, international students who study in Spain must purchase some form of health insurance.

We strongly recommend that you don’t leave home without travel insurance. It is also worth making sure that your travel insurance will cover repatriation home or to better medical facilities elsewhere. Your insurance company may be able to locate the nearest source of medical help.

EU Residents

Citizens of the European Union or the European Economic Area or Switzerland who are covered under the social security system of their own country must acquire a European Health Insurance Card from the public health authorities of their country before departing for Spain. This card will provide them with the necessary health coverage during their stay in Europe.

Non-EU Residents

Citizens of non-EU countries must take out a private health insurance plan before departing for Spain. Some countries have mutual health provision agreements with Spain; make sure this applies to your country. If not, you will need to find a private health insurance plan that works for you.
